I really felt like writing few posts about Super Mario Bros. and the evolution of the Mario Series over time. As many of you may or may not know, Super Mario Bros. was based off of the arcade game Donkey Kong. This was one of the early "platformer" games.
Platformer games are all about running and jumping and the Mario series has stayed very similar throughout the years. Save the damsel from the monster by running and jumping. For nearly 30 years, Mario has been saving the girl. Why is it that this series is so successful.
I think its because of its simplicity and familiarity that we keep going back to Mario over and over again. The gameplay all revolves around moving Mario left and right with the controller and jumping. In more recent games, there have obviously been new mechanics added to the game, but funtamentally, holding the Nintendo Wii Remote sideways to play New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the same as an original NES Controller.
